Work was the pits yesterday. I think I just assume that our clients will ALSO be busy with their personal stuff like I am and that we’d be slow during the holidays. That never happens. Like clockwork, December tends to be a busy month. I wrapped up a kick-off conference call with a new client and just needed air. I had to go uptown to pick up my race bib for today’s race anyway so I started out on foot walking from Herald Square to Grand Central (about 10 blocks) where I planned on catching the subway uptown to New York Road Runners. But something happened to me in those minutes and I just felt that with every step I walked I felt less stressed. So instead of getting on the subway I continued walking uptown and additional 20 blocks. (20 blocks is approximately 1 mile).

Passed Bliss Spa on my way. Thought about asking if they took "walk-ins". But then I remembered I don't "pamper out the small stuff"....I sweat out the small stuff =)

I popped in to get my race number and then thought i’d continue the walking “therapy” so I headed up a block and entered Central Park at Engineer’s Gate which is where I entered the Park on 11/3 during the NYC Marathon at my very emotional mile 22-23. I felt such a sense of peace and contentment. Being reminded of that awesome marathon day allowed my mind to stop focusing on my current workload woes and instead reflect on my accomplishments and how amazing 2013 has been.

I walked an additional 20 blocks and then jumped on the subway back to work since at this point my lunch “hour” was well beyond an hour. So 2.5 miles of walking and almost 2 hours out of the office and I was good as new. Sometimes that’s all you need. I returned to my desk and saw the most beautiful gift that was left for me by one of our vendors. Score!

Godiva chocolate...the perfect gift!

I completed my work for the day and then headed home.

This morning my alarm woke me at 5:00am. Good thing I set 2 alarms because I did the SAME  thing I did the morning!  Last time I checked, Saturday is NOT a weekday.

I bundled up in my running gear layers and headed to meet my running peeps for our 15K in Central Park. 7am flurries turned into a steady snowfall just as the 8:30am race began. It was magical. I was so happy….smiling from ear-to-ear. I love snow. I love running. I love friends. WIN-WIN-WIN!

Running Peeps!

It’s a PR but only because I haven’t run a 15K in 3 yeas.

one more running peep!

I ran a good race, a PR by 14 minutes actually. But last time I ran a 15K distance was this race in 2010 when I was a lot slower overall). My Garmin said 9.5 miles (instead of 9.3) so average pace 9:48. My official time was only 4 seconds different but because the distance is 9.3 My official average pace was 10:00 on the button.  I definitely hit a wall today around mile 7. It was tough getting up Cat Hill the second time. I didn’t eat much this morning before the race and didn’t eat anything at all during the race. At one point I could hear my stomach growl.

1214splitsI’m now home and thawed out and refueled (The box of Godiva is almost gone!) and watching the snow come down.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Question: Have you ever run in the snow? Do you ever just feel so overwhelmed at work that you need to walk 50 blocks to clear your head? LOL!

Hi there,

It’s Thursday. I love Thursdays because it’s my day off.

Last year on this day it was 12.12.12. Today is 12.12.13 and tomorrow is 12.13.13 (Friday the 13th! Are you superstitious?) If there were a 13th month what would we call it? Where did the months of the year get their names anyway? And why am I talking about this?

I had plans to go Christmas shopping with a friend at some outlet stores at 11am so I got up early, put my coffee in a travel mug, bundled up and took the dog out first to the park because I am the best doggie mom (according to the dog anyways).

Then I went out for a brisk 5 mile run. I love cold weather running. It was 21 degrees (RealFeel of 12).

photo 3 copy

Christmas shopping on a weekday is just so much more civilized. And since the outlets we went to are outdoor (vs a mall) and with the temps in the 20s we pretty much had the place all to ourselves. No lines! There was just one unfortunate aspect of the day…my credit card is bleeding out. It was abused and I feel no remorse (yet).

Confession: This is not the first time I’ve gone outlet shopping during the holidays and spent more money on myself than for the gifts I should have been buying for other people. Yes, I’m afraid this has become an annual tradition and I’m not proud of it. My excuse is that I’m not one to spend a lot on myself during the course of the year (except for running registration fees of course) but come December, I go nuts.

It really started on Cyber Monday when I ordered that trampoline. (Which came yesterday—YAY—except it was missing a leg—BOO!—but I called the company’s customer service and they’re mailing me the missing leg—YAY! I’ll report back on how I like it in a future post.)

Then last night I went to a Touchstone Crystal jewelry party. I fell in love with this pendant necklace so I bought it.

Today’s purchases included a whole bunch of winter gear from Columbia Sportswear because I’ll be doing a lot of running in the winter. Some of the items were originally $130 and marked down to $50. Others were $65 marked down to $20. Have I mentioned how much I love outlets?

striped long sleeve half zip, 2 cool running jackets (one with armholes!) and two vests. (Duncan thinks the blue vest is for him)

The black vest (4th from left above) is a lighter weight with a hood. It’s going to make the perfect extra layer of a long sleeve tech shirt when I’m running in 20 degree weather for sure. And that light blue jacket (2nd from left above) has soft cuffs with thumbholes! I LOVE thumbholes.

Then I bought not one, but 2 pairs of sunglasses.

photo 2-1

Maui Jim Ho’okipa Sport, Oakley Break Point, Lucky jeans, earrings and iPad cover

I scored a pair of Oakley Break Point sunglasses for $45 (original price was $130)  and then I got a pair of Maui Jim Ho’okipa Sport sunglasses for running. They definitely were not a bargain but since the Oakley’s were practically free…..ok I’m rationalizing. =)

Oh and I got Lucky at Lucky Brand Jeans. A sweet leopard print ipad case for $9.97, some cute earings at 50% off and 2 pairs of really awesome “baby” boot cut jeans that were buy one pair get the second 1/2 price. They are soft and stretchy (think a combination of denim and leggings) and the darkest indigo which really flatter my athletic runner’s thighs =) Finding good jeans is as awesome as eating an ice cream sundae for breakfast!

So all in all a great day. The season is quickly spinning into a frenzy of events….I’ve got the 15K tomorrow morning, a holiday party on Sunday, and 2 holiday parties next week back to back. I’m making a pact with myself to remain true to my blog’s title and not sweat the small stuff but rather sweat out the small stuff. I don’t want to lose sight of the spirit of this time of year by being overwhelmed and worried about “fitting it all in”.

My dearest friend Sue who is a writer and an animal lover (she doesn’t run but I love her anyway) has been writing over at Writeawaysue. If you’d like a nice mix of humor, inspiration and some “reality check—life could be worse” go take a read.

Question: What are your weekend plans? Are you behind with your holiday preparations/decorating/shopping? Running any races? Anyone start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions?

Yesterday morning I thought I’d work on getting the tree up. It’s not one of my favorite things at first, but after it’s up and all sparkly I am always happy I did it.

tree

no gifts to wrap yet and put under the tree so we’re just using Duncan’s toy boxes for now

I can never just accept that no matter how much I move my furniture around, it’s always best to just leave it where it was and make the tree fit somehow. So after spending 2 hours moving furniture and getting nowhere, I started to get cranky and all Scrooge! So I dropped everything and headed out for a run.

Nothing says Scrooge more than too much pink

I don’t think I planned on going farther than 4 miles, but I didn’t feel like waiting to cross at a traffic light so I tweaked the route a bit and next thing you know it ended up being 6.2….a 10K which I’ve decided to call the Sweat Out the Scrooge 10k. I’m sure there are a lot of people who would register for this if I made it an official event…Let’s be real….how many of you get frustrated by the holidays season in some way? Well, the run really worked because I came back feeling much more eager and happy to get back to putting up the tree. And after a few trips to and from the attic and a little prosecco the job was done!

I have to say I am sort of embarrased that I don’t have a single running or marathon related ornament on the tree. So I just ordered a couple—this one….

There are a couple of really beautiful ones on etsy but i’m hoping someone will get me one from there as a gift. 🙂 Hint Hint!

Runladylike had a post about how to use your marathon finisher’s medals as ornaments. I thought that was such a great idea that I tried it today. Success! Now my tree is blingy too.

This morning I took the dog for another romp in the woods.

I am SO achy everywhere from all the climbing into the attic and furniture pushing so I decided just a casual walk would be enough today. We had a lot of rain recently and the little stream that we have been just jumping over was too big to do today but I saw this makeshift tree limb bridge and that’s how I got across.

photo 3

I’m now writing out holiday cards and deciding if I should go do some shopping. Probably not a good idea =)

You remember when I showed you the outside of my non-decorated home in this post? Well, I just gave it a little holiday face-lift!

I’ve had 2 really low key weekends in a row but next weekend I FINALLY have some exciting stuff happening. I’ll be running the Ted Corbitt 15k with my running peeps on Saturday. I have run this one before. It’s usually really cold! Here’s a funny finisher’s pic of me and my friend Running on Butter after completing it in 2010. Yes those are bagels! HAHA!

And Sunday I’m going to a holiday party.  I say this every year, I can’t believe how fast the year has gone by. If only we could hit the slow motion button some days. I hope you’re having a nice weekend that’s filled with holiday fun and nothing to make you go all Scrooge like me.

Question: What’s the one thing you don’t really like about the holidays? What would you do differently? I don’t like the whole crazy/frenzied feel that this time of year brings. I’d love to take it down a notch and maybe make some more low key events with friends…like perhaps a new year’s pajama party.

Hi there.

I am happy today. Want to know why?

1. I ran
2. I FINALLY set up social media functionality for this blog. See…. —–>
3. I took a nice walk with the doodle in a meadow/wetlands area
4. I was off from work today

I have a routine with the dog that whenever I leave the house I have him lay down on his dog bed and I give him a cookie. Before I left for my run this morning he had a moment of confusion and got the stairs mixed up with the dog bed. But then when he saw that I was standing on his dog bed he got all posessive and came to “claim it”. Good dog!

I headed out the door for a new 5 mile route thanks to Day 5 of the 25 days of fitness challenge that Monica over at RunEatRepeat is hosting. (Today’s fitness task was to try a new workout or take a new running route). It ended up being WAY MORE UPHILL than my usual route. But I embraced it! Hills get you higher right? Well elevation-ally speaking anyway.

I noticed a whole boatload of holiday decorations as I ran through the neighborhood. Some things I’m just not sure about…..so let’s discuss:

First there was the square snowman. Is this supposed to be a snowman made of ice cubes? Then wouldn’t it be an iceman? Or is it a Marshmallow man?

iceman

Frosty the ice man

Then there is what I call the Yard Sale. How many lawn adornments is ok. I think this is probably borderline.

Cartoon Characters: Do we think that characters like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Snoopy, Mickey and Minnie are stealing Santa’s thunder?

And is this Santa a little creepy?

Does Hanukkah Harry Exist? Or is this just a Jewish Polar Bear?  And Does that mean there might be Jewish Penguins out there too? (I just noticed the santa clad dachsund to the left. weird!)

Mr & Mrs. Santa Ducks? These homeowners have to be duck enthusiasts. Either that or they’ve quacked up!

ducksAnd then the yard sale house had some duck-age happening too (it looks like left over from previous holidays)

moreducksSpeaking of previous holidays, I think it’s safe for the scarecrows to come down now.

sally-nodecorateI better stick to running.

Considering it’s December here in NY it was rather warm today, so I took the doodle for a nice walk.

Question: Discuss what you think of the boatload of holiday decorations I covered here. Do we like ducks? Are we cool with having Santa share his spotlight with Disney and Sesame Street characters? What’s more pleasing to you, the yard sale look or a single wreath with some white lights and a single bow? I’m a less is more girl.
