Okie Dokie my friends. I’ve decided to recap this relay in two parts. So without further ado here’s how Day 1 went down and a few tips sprinkled throughout just in case you ever decide to run one of these (or run again if you’ve already done one).

First here are the Call me a CABernet runners in order of appearance:

Friday morning we woke up 2:30am (not a typo!), packed up the van and headed to the start. #yawn

We arrived at Golden Gate Park about 4am and made our way to the check-in and mandatory
safety briefing #yawn

Ragnar takes safety very seriously and requires all runners to wear a reflective safety vest from 6:30pm to 7am and the runner on the course must wear a headlamp and blinking butt light as well. Makes for great fashion statements =)

We had a start time of 5:15am. With 500 teams participating they assigned us all start times based on our average pace so that there wouldn’t be bottlenecks at each exchange or the finish (more on this later as bottlenecking was one of the negatives I felt about the race).
Elvia started us off with leg 1. We were finally feeling awake and ready to cheer her on along with some other teams who also had the 5:15am start.

The first six legs were fairly uneventful. We all just wanted to get ourselves into a groove and a process.

We rotated responsibilities….When Elvia was running, Mike was getting prepared to run. Lisa was driving and one of us was navigating, the others were there to ensure Elvia got back to the van safely and Mike got going with his leg ok. TIP 1: If you choose to do a Ragnar Relay as an ultra team make sure you plan out rotation of all responsibilities. For instance, first determine how many runners are willing and able to drive (19 foot vans are no joke!) Then ensure no runner has to drive the leg before or after their leg. They will want to either change into dry clothes or fuel etc.) We were a little too lax about appointing a “copilot/navigator” and a “runner fetcher” so as the hours passed and people became sleepy and hungry and cranky no one was loving the idea of having a responsibility assignment and were less likely to volunteer ourselves.

During the first chunk of legs, while everyone was still happy and awake and the novelty hadn’t worn off we took pictures at the exchanges and just enjoyed the experience.

TIP 2: Work just as hard to keep the team spirit up as you do the running. We started out strong but sort of crumbled with that spirit as we got sleep deprived.

Right away I remembered something else as we began legs 7-12.

Since I was runner #6 I passed off the slap bracelet to Elvia at Exchange 7 and instantly realized that it was a much larger exchange. I had forgotten about this in past relays. Because traditional relay teams are 2 vans, van 1 ends and van 2 begins at exchange 7 (and again at 13, 19, 25, and 31) and there tends to be double the crowds and double the amount of parked vans. So since Elvia had a fairly short leg for leg 7 my time was limited and the line for the Honey Buckets (otherwise known as porta-potties) was long and I was really worried I wouldn’t have time to go before we had to bust out of that exchange and head to the next.

TIP 3: When planning, be prepared to need a few extra minutes at the bigger exchanges and make sure the runner knows ahead of time that they might just have to wait an extra 30 minutes before having the opportunity to pee or change or what have you. Seriously, the running is the easy part with these kind of relays. It’s all the logistics that get complicated.

We had a cooler in the van with food that we all bought the night before and plenty of water. After my second leg I pulled out a half sandwich to munch on. Ah, we were still in the honeymoon period! By the time 24 hours had passed I was sick to my stomach and just eating trail mix hoping it would stay down. #notpretty

Night was upon us as we approached leg 14 or 15 and we slacked on picture taking a bit. Both Lisa and Valerie had 9 mile legs during this time (both were unsupported or partially unsupported legs making it more challenging for them) We did have the opportunity to stop once for lisa to replace her headlamp that died. I ran my first night leg at about 11pm and finished just before midnight.

18 legs down, about 100 miles covered and 16 hours had passed as we said goodbye to Friday and officially started Day 2…

It’s September 11th… I just want to start out by sharing this Facebook exchange…

sallpostsusanreplyYeah, I’m lucky to have come out of that tragedy practically unscathed. Susan never made it to her office (thank god!). Her picture frames on her desk and other personal effects became dust like the thousands of human beings we lost that day. I’ll never forget how scared I was 2 days later as I tried to resume “normalcy” and return to work. This just touches the surface of how that day has changed me and I’m sure all of us. How often do you find yourself meeting someone new, a stranger and somehow the question gets asked “Where were you on 9/11?”.

And so I set out for this morning’s run with that this, the 13th anniversary on my mind as I do so often (I still break into a sweat when my bus gets stuck in traffic in the tunnel or on a bridge thinking “is this the next target? am I going to die right now?). I actually set out for 6 miles today but I’m just feeling so sluggish. I decided to cut it short at 5.

It’s crazy to me that lately I’m struggling with the mile between 4 and 5. It feels like I’m running a marathon. It’s like all I have in me is 3 milers and then I just poop out. I’m taking a step back to look at the big picture. It’s OK! I’m slow, I’m sluggish. But I’m still able to run. And have felt only minor aches in the injured foot that I seem to recover from quickly. #endsoapbox

I ran along the beach on a nice flat loose gravel trail. Thought that’d be a nice change of pace from my usual asphalt route. Oh, and I went and had a moment of silence on the beach. All was serene until I realized I stepped a little too close to the shoreline and the water came right up over my feet! #whoopsie

I’ll rewind to last night quickly. Instead of running my 2-a-day today I opted to run late last night and then this morning. So I followed the moon for 3 miles and practiced running in the dark. Really gotta be Ragnar ready right?

Tomorrow I’m going to try for 3 runs. But only 2-3 miles each and then I think I’ll be taking a rest day. Holy cheese balls I’m leaving on Tuesday!

Set the alarm for 6am so that I could run 4 miles before work. Somehow lately I’ve been sleeping right through my alarm. I think my hand knows how to push the snooze before the 8 minute interval is up. Well this morning it was the smallest, but most annoying chirp that woke me.

The battery in my carbon monoxide detecter needs to be replaced. Who ever has replacement 9-volts? Not me! I’ve got 2 dozen AA batteries though…sigh! I actually remember doing a project when I worked at Scholastic about fire safety and they always suggest changing smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries when you turn the clocks forward/backward (That would be April and November).

Anyway, I thanked the First Alert for getting me out of bed and set out for my run. First I had to devise a plan to remove the doodle from my lap. Eventually I remembered the magic words “Duncan, do you want a cookie?”. Unfortunately my legs felt super heavy and while the weather was lovely and cool I just wasn’t feeling it. So I cut it short at 3 miles instead of 4 and used my bonus 10 minutes to stretch and foam roll while catching up with Duncan (he says life is good!).

This morning I set out at 5:15 am for the city to run the Autism Speaks 4 Miles of Hope event in Central Park.

I’m a member of the New York Road Runner’s Club and if we run 9 of their races during the course of the year, and volunteer for 1 race we get guaranteed entry into the NYC Marathon for the following year. I’m not sure yet if I want to run it again (I have run it twice), but I might as well work toward getting entry and then I can decide later on. Today’s race marks the 6th race. I’ve got 1 scheduled for October, 1 for November and one for December and I just signed up to volunteer to give out race bibs one day next month. So I’m on track to complete the 9+1 requirement.

Mike and Lisa (two of my Ragnar teammates) were coming into the city to run their first of 2 runs today so we met up on the corner of 77th and Central Park West and they met Forest(er) for the first time.

It was my first time driving the new wheels over my favorite bridge and into the city.

And ironically I was parked in the Subaru Forester section. An older version was parked right in front of me.

We ran about a mile and a half to where I had to pick up my race bib.

one of the volunteers must have had a lot of time on their hands. They pinned 4 safety pins together and left little groupings. So you just had to grab one. =)

Then we met up with Marlon, a running peep who I’d never actually met in person before. He had the infamous Ragnar bag that’s been in our little relay running family for the last few years. Its’ got all the safety items like reflective vests and headlamps and fun things like soap crayons for decorating the outside of the van. I ended up running the entire race with Marlon which was great (thanks for the company Marlon!!). New stories to share and encouragement to keep me going through another hazy, hot and humid day. And a decent (for me) finish time.

After the race and a quick stop for iced coffee I headed home and jumped right in the shower. Then I grabbed the doodle and we went to my friend’s picnic.

And now I’m chillin’ on the sofa and watching some classic movies….Fools Rush In, then When Harry Met Sally and now Love Actually. Ahhh! I’m so happy to have nothing on the agenda tonight. (well I’ve got a ton of sweaty running clothes to wash but that can wait until tomorrow).
