I’m a fan of sushi! Spicy Tuna rolls, California rolls, Boston rolls….yeah delish….but today I “ate it” on the sidewalk and rolled my ankle. #fail

Gratefully I caught myself quickly and am pretty sure I avoided any major damage. I ran 2 additional miles afterward and everything felt pretty good. Seriously, the entire park loop that I was running on was not only shoveled but super salted and totally dry yet this one little snowball just played a trick on me.

outdoor run

nice and easy 5 miles. nice and balmy 25 degrees.

I completed a nice easy 5 miles out in a balmy 25 degrees. Tomorrow I’m running 13.1 and it looks like the temp will be about 11 degrees, so today was a good check-in to see how many layers I’ll really need. I hate to overheat.

I’ve made some progress getting some of the rooms back in order since having my house painted. Will post some before and after pics tomorrow.

And now I better go accomplish something OTHER than running and blogging.

Question: Ever ALMOST injure yourself but somehow manage to come out unscathed? Tell me about it?

Bring on the Rain is a song by Jo Dee Messina. Have you ever heard it? It’s a song I always play when I’ve had one of those “small stuff” days.

“Another day has almost come and gone
Can’t imagine what else could go wrong
Sometimes I’d like to hide away somewhere and lock the door
A single battle lost but not the war (’cause)
Tomorrow’s another day
And I’m thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain”

Today started off with a 5am wake up so I could drop my beloved, ahem, 11 year old Jeep to the mechanic by 7am.

I had been hearing some rattling. Also, the rear swing door wouldn’t open and I had a recall to be completed as well. I caught a bus from there to work and was at my desk at 8:15 (well over an hour early!).
Midday, I got the call from the mechanic with the bad news. It would be a few thousand dollars to repair. From leaking power steering lines and batteries to broken pieces of my exhaust, a serpentine belt and tension rod that needed replacement, and heck, even a stripped lug nut. Oh and the work wouldn’t be done until the next day. Now, I know damn well that life can throw you true curve balls. I watched my husband die as I held his hand when I was just 25. Yes, that’s the stuff that is supposed to make you feel slammed and pounded. But I tend to get rattled (just like my exhaust) with the small stuff. The things that break my routine or cause me to worry about the future. That’s why I firmly believe running is my therapy. It’s one of the only (healthy) ways for me to cope with the small stuff. Of course my timing sucked with this one since I just ran my final race of the year on Saturday….I didn’t run today. I won’t be running for at least another week while I try and rest my hamstrain ( get it? hamstring pain….hamstrain…I should trademark that!). So I’ll just try and keep my mindset in recovery mode and sit on the couch with my dog….

Now if nothing else could get me to check myself, It’s Veteran’s Day today. I’m so in awe of those who have served (and are currently serving) our country.

And it’s also apparently almost Christmas. I saw Santa at the mall yesterday. Not cool! And those lame commercials are starting to appear.

Question: How do you cope with unexpected “small stuff”?  What’s your favorite coping candy?

This morning I went out for my first run post-marathon. 3 easy miles.

photo 1 I felt ok for the most part. Just some soreness in the quads. Oh and a groin twerk tweak…..that pesky groin strain seems to have reared it’s ugly head again. It first bothered me back in June after I started doing some squats one morning and I guess I wasn’t warmed up. Well, I suppose it’s been working really hard and just letting me know it’s time to take a rest. So after Saturdays 1/2 marathon i’ll be taking at least 7 straight days off to rest it.

Today I alternated between frozen corn and a heating pad. I’ll repeat tomorrow.

ice packs are boring. frozen corn is fun.

I was kinda bummed about it so I decided to go to my favorite store and use a gift card I got from my 40th birthday. ALL Reebok apparel was on sale 50% off. I bought 2 pairs of long running pants. The Reebok Women’s Printed Waistband Performance Pants

and the Reebok Printed tight Fit Printed Performance Legging

Total was $55! SCORE! It’s hard to believe my big 40th birthday bash was 2 weeks ago! I just put away my cards. (Yes! I’m a pack rat and save all birthday and Christmas cards each year)

It’s gonna be about 30 degrees at the start on Saturday. So I’m going through all my winter running gear from last year to see what’s what. I think I’ve got plenty for this season but always good to take inventory.

Question: Favorite winter running gear?

Oh lordy.

I was a hot mess this afternoon during my short 4 (that should have been 5) miles.

I had a dentist appointment this morning at 9am. I’m in the middle of getting a crown re-done. Lots of novacaine numbing and drilling going on. When I wrapped up at the dentist I quickly managed to squeeze in a few errands and deal with a few work related emails (i took today as a sick day but didn’t want to leave people hanging). By noon I finally realized I better get to steppin running because it was already 80 degrees. And off I went on what was to be a casual 5 miler. Oh, but casual this was not. NO it was a mess with a dress singlet and capris. First the sweat started to pour into my eyes because I opted for no hat or visor #FAIL!. I did however have sunglasses on but that just made the sweat pool up faster and sting my eyes even more. By mile two I was wiping and rubbing my eyes so much that I couldn’t even see. Combine that with a fingernail and BAM I left a nice big bleeding cut above my eyebrow. At this point I was flat out PISSED! I just wanted to get home. My mouth was half numb still but the throbbing from the tooth that was drilled started to get worse.

I cut the run down to 4 and went home only to dribble my entire bottle of water down my shirt as I couldn’t feel my lip. It’s actually kind of funny now.

Then I read this girl’s post and was so relieved that someone else was having a craptastic day.

Luckily I was able to hijack a friend to go to my favorite tex-mex restaurant. Because chips and salsa work wonders for the soul.

So there you have it folks! I better re-think the name of my blog. Because today the sweat only made the small stuff even more annoying. Tomorrow I have a 9 miler on tap. Gonna try and keep it to 10:50 pace for all 9 miles. We’ll see. Happy humpday! I’m off to walk the dog in the hopes I don’t scratch myself anymore today.

Question: Do you agree chips and salsa cure all or am I not a wise runner?
