I am doing my best to type this as the hours of shoveling on Sunday have rendered my body sore beyond belief.
Mother nature dumped over 2 feet of snow on us over the weekend. It was awesome! Well, except for the shoveling.
I drove over to Mr. SOTSS’ house Friday night when there was only a few inches on the ground. I figured if I was going to be housebound for a bit it would be more fun spending the time with him and his girls. We completed a jigsaw puzzle…
we counted….1008 pieces….that’s 8 more than the box said!
And made Shrinky Dinks…
I made the rainbow, pencil and shooting stars….The other beauties were done by Mr. SOTSS’ 10 year old. She’s quite the budding artist. Love her evenly spaced sprinkles and watermelon seeds
And during the peak of the storm when they had a travel ban we just took the dogs and the sleds around the neighborhood streets. Chester actually pulls the sled. He’s pretty talented.
Both Mr. SOTSS and I tried out our snow shoes too.

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a good weekend. I had a nice balance of lazy and busy as well as some highs and lows when it comes to running. I’ll fill you in…
Friday it was sunny and relatively warm (for winter in New York City)—about 40 degrees. So I decided to just go for a short run. I was so thrilled that I felt no knee pain at all. I’m continuing to enjoy the Garmin Forerunner 10.
Short and sweet and pain free!
It was the first time since last September that I ran on 2 consecutive days (I had run 5 miles the day before). HIGH! Then I took the doodle for a walk to enjoy the sunshine too.
Saturday was quite the lazy day. We had snow and rain overnight leaving the roads slick so I took advantage and just stayed put and did stuff around the house like cleaning, freelance design work and knee rehabbing. I did manage to get the doodle some run time on this soccer field by my house to enjoy the few inches of snow that we had received.
Running it out
Of course with all the lounging around, I found myself going in to the kitchen a little to frequently and kept dipping into this bag of chips:
My name is Sally and I’m addicted to these chips
I ate so many I felt a bit sick so I finally got in the car and just drove to the mall to walk around, but more importantly, to get away from the chips and just get out of the house.
Today I took advantage of another sunny day and went to the beach to get in my 8 miler…well, I tried anyway. LOW! My knee gave out an hour into the run and I just immediately stopped running and walked back to the car.
Serenity!
Beautiful scenery for the consolation prize
It wasn’t worth it to push it any more. I have already said that I’m prepared to take more time off and not run the New Jersey Marathon in April if this knee isn’t healed and I’m sticking to what I said. For the most part I’m ok with this but we all know I’ll cry like a baby if I truly can’t run it. (I swear I feel like a broken record…although most days are like Groundhog’s day here at Sweat Out The Small Stuff….you know….walking the doodle, running, bitchin’ about injuries, binging on carbs…)
These are some dirty, sad snowmen
I’ve come to the conclusion that 3-5 miles is my comfortable distance for now and I think the knee will need some more strengthening and rest before I can realistically do distances more than that. Le Sigh!
I did a repeat of Friday and took Duncan for a walk to enjoy the sunshine too (you see! just like Groundhog’s day!)
Leading the way
Paw prints in the snow make me happy
Good thing because I hear we’re getting a big storm of a foot or more of snow starting tomorrow afternoon!
Do you like potato chips? Do you have a favorite kind? What’s the snack you tend to binge on? I love kettle chips!
My morning started so peacefully. I took Duncan to the park and it was so quiet. The air was still. All I could hear were a few birds and the water trickling down the stream in the woods. The freezing temps of the last few months disappeared and it reached nearly 50 degrees.
Hello Sunshine!
Snow covered bridge
Hey Ma! Put the phone away please so we can walk a little faster
I enjoyed listening to my feet in the soft snow…
We walked for about 40 minutes. Then I came home to drop the dog off and headed out for a 5 mile run…
matching my flowers!
This is a step back week for me. I’m enjoying that. =) I’ll be getting in one more 5 miler and a 10 miler over the weekend to complete the week at 20.5 miles.
While the snow is melting thanks to the warm temps the garbage is accumulating like crazy!
garbage pile
Hoping this stuff will get collected soon…It’s nowhere near as pretty as snow.
Today was a good day for me. I hope it was for you too.
Question: Tell me one good thing that happened to you today.
Snowbody knows just how much I love the snow more than me. Really, I don’t know what my fascination with it is. It causes inconvenience in commuting, my back to ache from shoveling and it’s even canceled my flight twice. But I am a snow bunny! I love snow!
Yesterday, I shoveled a bit and then trekked in to the office. I was one of 5 people who made it in. While I waited for the bus, my hair, which was still wet froze. I could turn it upside down and it would still stand straight up.
fro yo hair!
ici-curls
I worked like a busy bee and then ran to my bus stop trying to make it back home before dark so the dog could have some snow time. But the bus took a LONG time to arrive. It was 11 degrees and I had on boots that didn’t keep my feet warm at all! (I’ve already started searching for better ones… L.L. Bean Sale anytime soon???)
NYC sure is the gritty city.
It was dark when I got home but luckily it was so cold Duncan really didn’t want to belabor the “process”. He got straight down to business…
this pee picture was actually from the night before so just imagine the snow is about 8 inches deeper.
I shoveled some more, had dinner and passed out on the couch. Thank god it was Friday. I was S.P.E.N.T.
Today I waited for the temperature to warm up so I didn’t go for my run until 2pm. (It was 5°F in the morning but warmed up to 25°F by the time I went. So Duncan got a little snow play action around noon…
a doodle’s nemesis….snowballs! he chews each one off when we get home
And then I opted to drive to a National park by me to do my run figuring the neighborhood streets and sidewalks would be messy. I just assumed they would have plowed the running path. I was wrong! But I ran anyway. 4ish miles total…some in the snow until I realized it was really hard and then I moved out to the road praying my new sneakers wouldn’t get destroyed (thankfully they didn’t….not a dirty sludgy salty mark at all). It was so beautiful though. I only saw 2 other groups of people….an older couple walking and another couple cross-country skiing! (Now there’s a good way to enjoy the non-plowed running paths!)
just before i started when I looked “fresh” lol!
I got to wear one of the new Columbia jackets from my shopping spree a few weeks ago today. It was AMAZING! I wasn’t cold at all (even with exposed legs). And to think it was originally $130 and I got it for $49.99 WOWSAH! SCORE!
So now I’m eating chinese food and staying cozy for the rest of the night.
I was too RUNgry to take a pic of my first serving which included the same + 2 dumplings. lol.
Tomorrow I’m off to the annual Little Christmas party that my friend throws each year. Everyone comes in PJs, brings a contribution toward dinner and we exchange “wrapped crap”. Oh I can’t wait to give you the recap on Monday. It should be a good time. And I’m bringing the S’more’s Crack Dip! I made it once before and it’s definitely worthy of an encore…
S’mores crack dip
did i mention i made it just for me? (I WISH!)
Okie Doke, enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Question: What’s your favorite Chinese food dish? I can never eat enough dumplings!
