I swear I don’t know what is wrong with me but I’ve just been so lethargic and not into any kind of exercise lately let alone running. But tonight, I forced my butt out for a decent walk with the dog when I got home from work and something magical happened. After about 20 minutes I felt the desire to pick up the pace and before you knew it I was sprinting a few blocks here and there. I think this is a sign that I just need a little more time to get back to business.

He's thrilled that I've finally decided that we could walk for more than 10 minutes after the sun sets.

The best part was that I finally hit 10,000 steps today.

FullSizeRender 915 days ago I had a 60,000 step day thanks to the NYC Marathon and since then I think I’ve reached 10,000+ maybe 2 or 3 days….one of which was the day we went hiking. Even this past weekend I took Duncan for a walk at the park both days but we didn’t go for more than 30 minutes because I just felt so fatigued.

I slept 8+ hours each night of this past weekend so maybe that had something to do with tonight’s burst of energy.

This is all very encouraging.

One sad piece of news. I think my Keurig is finally dead. So tonight I whipped out my handy dandy percolator and you know what? I missed it!

I hope you all have a great week.

Are you a coffee drinker? Do you do drip, pods, k-cups, french press, percolator, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts????

Happy Monday!

Anniversaries:

November 6th marked 4 years to the day that I ran my first full marathon. I can’t ever forget the date mainly because it’s printed on the sleeve of the finisher’s jacket I bought at the expo =)

I still remember everything about that day. The good, the bad and the ugly =)

And November 7th marked 17 years to the day that I was married.

The words are part of the “Indian Prayer” that was given by the officiant. Ironically his days on this earth were not long. But he’s always with me.

While we didn’t make it to anniversay #1 thanks to cancer taking him just 5 months after we got married I still treasure the date and have it etched in my heart forever. I am who I am today because of him and because of my experience and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Weekend Fun:

So this weekend was my weekend with Mr. SOTSS. I had tons of work to do so I stayed home Friday night and all day Saturday to get it done and he enjoyed the time to clean out his gutters and work on his bathroom renovation. I did get Duncan to the park for a bit and then he went to the groomer.

just before going to the groomer. I love his shag and would keep it long if it were easier to maintain.

I headed over to Mr. SOTSS’ house for dinner Saturday night and then we went to see the movie Burnt with Bradley Cooper. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money or your time. It wasn’t good 🙁 but the Reese’s Pieces, reclining seats and company were all perfect.

Date night!

Yesterday morning we met the dog hiking group for a nice 2 hour hike in a beautiful park in nj. After the organized hike ended we walked around for another 40 minutes to take in more of the beautiful leaves and fresh air. It was just about 50 degrees and sunny.

I was struggling on some rock scrambles and worked up a good sweat trying not to fall. Leaves can disguise a lot.

I have been a little overwhelmed lately with all of my work commitments and getting away from my laptop and spending some quality time with my guy and the pups was just what I needed. We hit up the local apple farms cider mill for a fresh baked cider donut and then met some of the hiking group for lunch.

they were so fresh that they were still warm!

After some more work on my end and house cleaning/football game watching for mr S we went grocery shopping together and then cooked meals for ourselves for the week.

This is how I work. And this is how the dogs relax after a good hike.

And then it was late and I had to go home and I pouted and sulked knowing I had a busy week of work ahead of me and that I wouldn’t see him again until Sunday. It’s hard to leave the one you love even for just a few days. I guess if we lived together I might be saying the opposite though. Lol.

Thank god for the hike because I have been fairly lazy since the marathon a week ago. I need to get through some more busy weeks at work but will slowly figure out a new exercise regimen by thanksgiving. I’m not happy about being a sloth buy it is what it is and I need to just be gentle with myself until I feel more adjusted to all these work commitments.

Well at least I know I’ll be slowly running two 5ks right after thanksgiving. Both are charity fundraisers. And definitely more hikes. This guy says more hikes.

Tuesday 3 miles

So after feeling a slight improvement running 3 miles on Tuesday I ran 7 miles today and FINALLY felt like the runner I’m used to.

7 miles

7 miles

I’ll never be fast but today I felt pep in my step. My leg turnover felt normal (NO MORE SHUFFLING!), my gait felt normal and my breathing felt normal and no side stitches. I averaged 11:15 miles and was pretty consistent for all 7 miles.

What do I think is the reason for finally having a better run?

1. I slept 2 extra hours on Monday and 1 extra hour on both Tuesday and Wednesday
2. I stayed away from artificial sweeteners and processed foods for the last few days.
3. I got new sneakers! (Brooks Ghost 8s)
4. The temps have been a little cooler
5. I took ibuprofen and walked for a mile with Duncan this morning before running

new kicks!

new kicks!

OK let’s discus #5 shall we? I have been suffering with some general back pain since the end of April. When the pain first arrived I thought I slept wrong and hoped it would go away in a few days. Well it didn’t. It comes and goes in waves and the actual pain center migrates. Sometimes it’s the sciatic nerve, other times the small of my back, sometimes it radiates to the front of my hips to the point I think i’m having issues with my ovaries!

I was trying to relieve my back pain last night. He was obviously quite comfortable

Anyway, this morning while I was still in bed and waiting for the alarm to go off, the pain was this constant dull ache and I just couldn’t get comfortable. I finally got up and took 2 ibuprofen. Then I grabbed the dog and we headed to the park for a walk.

Both the ibuprofen and the walk did wonders and the back started feeling great. And as a side-effect, my achy sore legs felt great too. I think this was one of the reasons I felt so much better running today.

I didn’t carry a water bottle but was happy to hit up this water fountain about 1/2 way through.

I’m meeting my running friends on Saturday morning for a long run. I’m aiming for 17 while they are going to cover about 23. We’re running most of this along the NYC Marathon route which is key! I’m feeling confident with some good sleep tonight and tomorrow night I’ll make it through Saturday’s run just fine. Not to mention having great company!

Whew!

So what’s new with you? Tell me one thing you’re happy about and one thing you’re frustrated with.

TGIF!

Sorry for the crickets over here this past week. I’m alive and well just going through some life stuff. Duncan was attacked by another dog but thankfully he is ok. Miraculously not a bite or scratch on him. It was scary and I had to work hard to get that dog to let go of Duncan and then restrain it until the owners came.

I love black!

I didn’t run all week until yesterday and by the time I hit the (HOT) pavement in the late afternoon it was over 90 degrees. D to the UMB!

I needed to document mile 2 because I was afraid I wasn't making it any further

I needed to document mile 2 because I was afraid I wasn’t making it any further

I managed to run the first mile fairly comfortably at my normal pace but then I stopped for some water and then I didn’t want to start up again. So I ran and walked in intervals the remaining 4 miles. I have to admit that many times I’ve had the voice in my head that begs me to walk but I always think about my blog post and I don’t want to post a string of posts about how I let the voice win. But yesterday the voice in my head was saying “F the blog—it’s TOO HOT!”  I tried to run every downhill and walk the uphills but truth be told I walked on some downhills too.

I ran the last 1/2 mile on a trail by my house mainly for the shade. Smiling but secretly freaking out that my water bottle is empty.

I ran, I walked but I didn’t quit. And I didn’t need to crawl so that’s a plus!

Yesterday was my last day at my job. I still have my freelance business but I’ll be exploring different full time gigs in the coming weeks. I took the Staten Island Ferry home and enjoy some beautiful postcard worthy views.

I typed up the typical goodbye email and ended it with this sentence:

“Life is a lot like running marathons. It’s not about winning or proving to others that you can run 26.2 miles. Sometimes it’s just about appreciating the journey and proving to yourself that you can go the distance while pushing through challenges along the way.”

I’m hoping to join my running peeps for a few miles tomorrow morning. I miss them! Then I have a photography gig for the afternoon and I’ll be headed to Mr. SOTSS’s for the evening.

Have a great weekend.

What are you up to?

Is it HOT where you live?

Are you good with heat or do you die in it like me?
