Hey there. Happy New Year to everyone.
I’ve had a rough week. Duncan got sick out of the blue last Wednesday. He literally was fine in the afternoon and by the evening he started vomiting. Every hour or two he’d jump off the bed and let me know he needed to go out. Mostly it was spitting up and eventually he started having “backdoor” issues. My poor pup. We went to the vet who gave him some meds.
Things got worse as he refused to eat for 2 days and before I knew it he was lethargic and I was so worried. We went back to the vet who said just keep giving him the meds and try chicken and rice.
I had actually already started the chicken and rice but Duncan seemed to have little interest. I was able to get him to take a bite or two from my hand and that was it. i even went and bought baby food. Anything to get him to perk up and keep from being dehydrated.
Eventually his appetite returned and while he’s still got the “backdoor” issues, his appetite is getting better and he’s eating the chicken and rice from his bowl now.
We’ve got another 3 or 4 days on the meds and hopefully he’ll be 100 percent by then. Needless to say I’ve been fairly useless. I had hoped to at least go to yoga once or twice but that didn’t happen.
I’m still on running hiatus. My feet have improved with rest and I can walk a lot better but I really don’t feel up to trying to run. Eh…I’m just in a funk. Bitter cold weather with ice and snow everywhere only makes it easier for me to be a couch potato.
This is the first time since I began running over a decade ago that I don’t feel sad about not running. It’s scary but it’s also liberating in a way.
I really can’t wait to share some news that’s actually new and not the same old same old 🙂 So for now I’ll just go with my New Year Nothing New situation and wait to see what’s next.
Do you plan to try anything new in 2018? Are you looking forward to anything big and exciting in 2018? What’s your running schedule like these days? Training for anything?
I’m in a funk too! Definitely the weather. Hard to get motivated when you’re freezing. Hope Duncan’s better soon.
Hoping you’ve emerged from your funk. I’m just getting back in a groove…
Happy New Year! I am sorry your pup has been so sick. It’s so awful isn’t it? Our dog battles arthritis and diabetes and it’s just heartbreaking when they are down. I’m still on my running break, too. I can comfortably walk and do my other sports but my hip tendonosis is just going to take a long time to resolve and I have come to accept it. I just am grateful for all the many things I can do. Running in the winter kind of sucks anyway (whereas walking isn’t so bad) so I am just going to see this as a positive and in March when things start to thaw out I hope my hip allows me to get back to it. But if not, I will just keep walking!
You have a great outlook focusing on all that you CAN still do. I hope March brings you a healthy hip and some running but at least keep walking right? 🙂
Happy New Year! I hope by now Duncan is back to his healthy, energetic self. I loved your Christmas card – he is such a good sport. 2017 was not the best to me regarding injuries. Here’s to an injury free 2018!
Thanks! He’s back to normal and I’m thrilled! Yes….here’s to an injury-free 2018!
This cold weather has put me in the biggest running funk! I think there is warm weather coming to Maryland and I will be back to my endorphin filled runs!
Hope you take advantage of the weather today. Looks like it’s going to be much warmer and sunny!
Just a random reader here…thought I’d drop in my $.02. Have you ever given Duncan activated charcoal when hes throwing up/having the runs? Look into it! I have a 60lb red heeler…whenever she is sick like that, I take an activated charcoal capsule(so it can be opened and use the powder) and open it, put about half of the powder in a bowl and add about 2 tbsp of peanut butter and mix it up, then slather it on a piece of bread and fold to make a half sandwich..and she eats it without thinking. If you don’t know, the activated charcoal works to absorb toxins(it is used sometimes when someone overdoses on pills). I use it when I’m sick…if I’ve thrown up once…I immediately go take a capsule…and i don’t throw up again. Its like a magic-sickness-pill! LOL! I’m not doctor….but I do always like to mention when I tell people about it, make sure not to take it around the time you take other medications(not within an hour or 2) because it will absorb that and render the medications useless.
Thanks for the info Alyssa! I remember working at my dad’s drug store and this one guy came in to buy activated charcoal on a regular basis. Now I know what it’s used for!
