It’s Throwback Thursday #TBT. (I really need to get my sweatoutthesmallstuff Instagram up)

1st Grade and WAY before I discovered running and WAY before I really had small stuff to sweat out

So today was supposed to be a 7 mile tempo run. I took the doodle out for a few walks totaling about 3 miles and by the time I got out the door for my run it was 4pm! (I had lots of work to do on my day off) So I opted to take the 7 down to 5 and call it a day.

Funny story about mile 2….there was a man running up the road ahead of me. He was close enough that I could smell a trail of his heated up deoderant. I became an “animal” from the scent. I wanted to get a “roadkill” So I kicked into high gear to try and pass him. Just as I was about 3 steps behind he came to a dead stop! He had arrived back to his home and was done. I was so deflated:( But the good thing is that I proved to myself that I can push it if I want.

Question: Do you ever try and pass people while running? Any fun weekend plans?

So funny thing…..I’ve been participating in road races of all distances since 2006 EXCEPT for 5k! That’s right! After 40+ scored events, I have yet to do a 5k! There have been 4 milers, 5 milers, 8ks, 10ks, half marathons and marathons but somehow I missed what’s usually the first distance.

Anyway, that will all change on September 29th. I’m officially signed up for the Tunnel 2 Towers 5K.

My friend Lisa lives right near the start and has been doing this for a few years now. I’ve usually backed out because I’m not such a fan of tunnels. But this year she coaxed me into it. I figured it was time to face some silly phobias head on before turning the big 40 next month.

As I filled out the online registration there were a few optional sections. You could donate money to the organization that runs the event and you could also run in honor of someone. I mentioned back in this post about my friend Gina’s dad who was killed recently. Ordinarily if given an option to run in honor of someone I usually put my husband’s name in. But this run is about heroes. It’s to honor and remember the heroes of 9/11 that sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. I just felt my friend’s dad was the perfect person to honor for this run. Because he was HER hero.

As she turns 40 this week, it’s my small gift. (she might even run it with me which would be so awesome. Maybe if everyone left encouraging comments below it would help her decide to do it!). If you want to donate you can do so here.

After 5 days straight of running I gave myself 2 days off which gave me the extra time in the mornings to take the doodle for some outdoor fun time. (I’ll get back to running later today actually with a 7 mile tempo). Duncan enjoyed a walk in the woods and some sprints on the soccer field. I enjoyed my coffee!

i like the mystical magical forest!

Hope everyone’s week is moving along nicely.

Questions: What was your first race? 5K? 10K? Marathon? Did you follow a plan or just sign up and run? Who is your hero?

Hi all,

Happy Labor Day. Hope you are all enjoying the day off. Well I did it! I completed my 5 days straight of running to complete my peak training for the Center of the Nation Series. Yesterday my schedule called for 16, my running friends were scheduled for 20 and I ended up meeting in the middle at 18.3 I thought I would just do all 20 but honestly I was falling apart around mile 17 and didn’t want to die trying.

day4

18 is Enough! Get it? (Anyone remember the TV show 8 is Enough??)

Highlights of the run:

1. Friends to share the pain fun with! We even stopped at mile 13 for iced coffee!)

2. Lots of lovely views of the Williamsburg Bridge—before running over it—and during running over it.

Graffiti galore on the Williamsburg Bridge.

3. Bumping into our friend Christi unexpectedly on the West Side Highway. She was also on a training run.

Lowlights:

1. Chafing!

2. Chafing some more!

3. More Chafing! With a dew point of 72 we were soaked with sweat that couldn’t evaporate leaving major chafing. I really did Sweat Out The Small Stuff!

chafing

Today, I procrastinated until the weatherman on the news said there was a storm 45 minutes away. I figured i’d try and log 3 relaxed recovery miles before the storm.

day5

I actually felt pretty good. I ran with compression socks for the first time and wonder if that helped. Somehow I just always feel self conscious and chicken out before making it out the door with my dorkey socks but I figured most people were still sleeping on this holiday Monday. LOL! I want to be an official convert but how on earth can I figure out how to not look like a cheeseball with them on?!  I hate the chub that pops out at the top of the sock by my knee.

Just one more reason to look forward to the colder weather. I can hide the socks under long pants.

Question: How do you pull off wearing compression socks? How do you prevent chafing or relieve the pain from chafing after it’s happened?
